Orgs Seeking Other Venues For Awards Ceremonies

The
Writers Guild of America West, the Directors Guild of America
and the Producers Guild of America might be forced to scramble
for new awards sites thanks to a just-launched union boycott
of nine luxury hotels that includes the Century Plaza.
The
orgs had announced last summer that they had selected the
venue, with the PGA kudos set for Jan. 22, DGA opting for
Jan. 29 and the WGA West choosing Feb. 19. The WGA East ceremonies
will take place simultaneously in New York at the Pierre Hotel.
"It's
likely we are going to look at other venues but the ultimate
decision will be one that the board will have to make,"
said WGA West assistant exec director Cheryl Rhoden.
"We
support our sister union and are actively seeking other venues,"
a PGA spokesman said.
Los
Angeles hotel workers repped by Unite Here called Wednesday
for a boycott of the hotels due to lack of progress in contract
talks. The union has asked supporters to avoid eating, meeting
or sleeping at the Century Plaza, Millennium Biltmore, Bonaventure,
Hyatt Regency, Wilshire Grand, Regent Beverly Wilshire, St.
Regis, Hyatt West Hollywood and the Sheraton Universal.
The
WGA West allowed Unite Here to distribute materials during
its reception in July at the Century Plaza during the Television
Critics Assn. tour.
Both
the WGA and DGA have about 12,000 members. The PGA, which
doesn't have collective-bargaining agreements, has about 2,000
members and acts as an advocacy group for the profession.
More
than a dozen San Francisco hotels have locked out about 4,000
Unite Here members for a month over contract conflicts. Those
negotiations resumed Wednesday.
