Chinese
Community Health To Help S.F. Hotel Workers
San Francisco Chronicle - November 18, 2004
The
Chinese Community Health Plan of San Francisco said Wednesday
it will extend health care coverage for two months to hotel
workers who are locked out of their jobs, if the labor dispute
is not resolved before benefits expire Dec. 1.
The
decision, made with the Chinese Hospital and Chinese Community
Health Care Association, follows word Tuesday that Kaiser
Permanente will extend coverage for two months to 3,500 union
workers, as well as their families, locked out of work at
14 San Francisco hotels. In all, about 4,300 union hotel workers
stand to lose health care.
Some
190 hotel workers and their families are enrolled in the Chinese
Community Health Plan.
"We
are doing this because it is consistent with our mission to
serve our community,'' said Richard Loos, chief executive
of the plan.
The
remaining 610 locked-out hotel workers involved in the labor
dispute are covered by PacifiCare, which is considering a
request from the hotel workers' union, Unite Here Local 2,
to extend coverage, a union spokeswoman said Wednesday.
