San Francisco Hotel Workers Step Up Pressure for New Contract

Unity in 2006Talks have resumed between hotel workers and San Francisco's Multi-Employer Group and the pressure is increasing on the coalition of 14 hotels. Local 2's vice president says, "In the upcoming weeks, there will be more demonstrations, more protests and more action inside the hotels until they realize that their stalling is not going to dilute the determination to fight for a fair contract." Several dozen were arrested recently at a sit-in at the San Francisco Hilton during a rally and march.

Nearly 4,300 maids, bellmen, cooks and other hotel workers have been locked in a labor dispute with the hotels since their contract expired in August. The protracted battle has included a two-week strike at four hotels and a 5 1/2-week lockout of workers at all 14 hotels last fall.

Negotiations stalled in February over several outstanding issues, including wages, health care and the length of the contract. More

The Big Picture
Why the Hotel Workers' Struggle Matters to You
The hotel workers' struggle is critically important. Collective bargaining is democracy in action at a time when America needs it most. We live in an era where corporations have more control over our lives and rarely do ordinary people have an opportunity to come together and shape the big decisions that impact their lives and indirectly affect all of us. Blue collar, white collar or no collar or at all, everyone has a stake in defending workers' rights. More
